[Tap Exchange] Travel Exchange Rate Calculator App

When traveling abroad, it’s pretty common to keep exchange rates in mind. Usually, I’d usually just look up the exchange rate on Google

But once you’re on the ground in a foreign country, it can be a hassle to look it up, which is why most people turn to currency converter apps.

The thing is, I’ve tried downloading all sorts of apps, but none of them supported reading large numbers aloud. (Seriously, OMG!)

In fact, the only app I know of that might have this feature is the "Tap Exchange(톡톡 환율계산기)."

Except... it doesn’t! Plus, there’s always that 1% of functionality that feels lacking. So, based on my own travel experiences, I decided to just build my own app. Due to Google’s policy, there's a 14-day private testing period, so I’m currently having some friends help with testing.

1. Large Number Reading

Naver’s currency converter can read large numbers, which is super helpful in places like Vietnam where the currency is valued at such large denominations.

For example, 280,000 Vietnamese dong is only about 15,000 won (KRW). The numbers are huge, and when you enter amounts, you’ll find yourself double-checking constantly. (In places like Laos or Vietnam, where the denominations are large, this feature is a lifesaver!)

But… after testing all the top currency converter apps on both the App Store and Play Store, none of them had this feature like Naver’s. So, I made sure to add it. Seriously, no other app has this, but once you use it, you’ll wonder how you lived without it.

2. Multiple Currencies (up to 3)

There are some apps that support multiple currencies, but many only support two.

However, when traveling to Vietnam, you really need to be able to use three currencies for convenience.

Why? Well, in Vietnam, you pay with Vietnamese dong locally, but you might use U.S. dollars at duty-free shops or hotels for tips. Also, it’s often better to exchange U.S. dollars for Vietnamese dong locally, so you end up using a mix of currencies. Being able to calculate all of this at once is such a game-changer.

3. History Feature

This history feature is something I’ve never seen in any other currency converter app—and it’s amazing.

Whether you’re traveling in Vietnam or elsewhere, there are times when you want to see the total of your previous calculations.

Just open the history menu, and you can see all your past calculations. You can even check off certain ones to add them together.

You can also add notes to your calculations, so you know exactly where you spent money. Even if you mix currencies like dollars and dong, the app calculates everything into your final currency, like KRW. (And you can share the history as an Excel file too—secret’s out!)

Honestly, you don’t even need a separate expense tracker. Just using this app can help you manage your travel budget.

This feature is hands down the most innovative thing I’ve ever seen in a currency converter app.

I’m someone who’s pretty careful about money, so when it comes to organizing my travel expenses, I used to sit down with my card statements and Google Sheets or Excel. But now, this app is going to be my new go-to tool!
